21h 30min, aug 29, 1970 y - Edwin Erving Miller & Genise Marie Rispin ABDUCTION & DOUBLE HOMICIDE

Description:

On Saturday, August 29, 1970, Edwin, 17, and Genise, 13, were last seen leaving Edwin's mobile home on Riverside Drive near Marina West, in Elsinore, Riverside County, CA. They were seen at the foot of Ortega Highway on the west side of Lake Elsinore, walking down the main street near the Crane Lakeside trailer park. They were headed on a date to a go-cart track a mile away (and/or to Four Corners).

Edwin and Genise were reported missing when they didn't come home, and searches were conducted. They apparently never made it to the go-cart track.

On the evening of Sunday, August 30, a man pulled over south of El Cariso on the Ortega Highway, about 15mi from Lake Elsinore, because of car trouble. There, he spotted an arm in some underbrush. He didn't notify authorities until the next day.

On Monday, August 31, Edwin's body was found and recovered by law enforcement. His body was in a shallow grave at the base of a turnout off the Ortega Highway, near El Cariso, just 2.6mi inside Riverside County lines. Edwin was found fully clothed, with nothing missing. His COD was difficult to determine, as there were no outwardly visible injuries, but authorities stated that he was "probably strangled."

On Saturday, September 12, two hitchhikers — Dennis Stanley, 19, and William Egger, 21 — discovered Genise's body in a ditch a few feet west of Cabot Rd near the Ortega Highway in San Juan Capistrano, Riverside County. She was found under a tree in a field near Camino Capistrano, west of the San Diego Freeway and south of Crown Valley Parkway. Genise was found fully clothed, and there were no signs of molestation. She had been strangled. She had been dead for approx. 12 days — i.e. since about August 31 — though she could have died as late as Saturday, September 5, 1970.

In March 1971 it was reported that the Riverside County police were reexamining the case after considering a separate unsolved murder in the county to possibly be linked to the Zodiac. This has led to further discussion in online Zodiac spaces — where I found out about the murder — and is the reason for the Connection tag on this post.

It seems that no one has ever been arrested for Edwin and Genise's murders, which are still unsolved and featured on the Orange County cold case page.
