Mary Magdalene uses expensive perfume to anoint Jesus.
John 12:4-6 - “But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, ‘Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.’ He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.”
Mary Magdalene’s Role and Acceptance
Mary Magdalene is depicted as a devoted follower of Jesus, who is accepted and honored by Him. Jesus’ treatment of women, including Mary Magdalene, is generally respectful and inclusive.
Luke 8:1-3 - “After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”
John 20:11-18 - Mary Magdalene is the first to witness Jesus’ resurrection and is commissioned by Jesus to announce it to the disciples.
Jesus’ choice of Mary Magdalene to deliver the news of His resurrection signifies her important role and acceptance within His ministry.
