23 h, mar 17, 1968 y - Stuart Edward Maher
Description:
Stuart Edward Maher was a 48 year old Western Pacific Railroad Co. tax consultant.
At about 11pm on Sunday, March 17, 1968, Maher was walking up Taylor St at Pine St, a block below Grace Cathedral, in San Francisco's Nob Hill district when he stopped for a red light. According to witnesses, at the same time, a man who was waiting on the other side of Taylor St got the green light and walked across to Maher's corner. Then, without a word, the man drew a small caliber gun, put it against the back of Maher's head behind his left ear, and fired one shot.
The attacker then ran east. A witness, John F Winter[s] (20-21yo), compared the attacker's gait to the waddling of a duck. The killer was dressed in dark clothes, and appeared to be between 30-40yo.
Winters told officers that Maher dropped unconscious without even knowing the attack had taken place, and without seeing his attacker. He died 0.5-1hr later in Mission Emergency Hospital. Police were called to the scene at the corner of Taylor & Pine St.s shortly after 11pm by a hotel resident who heard the shot.
Winters had been 25ft behind Maher, also walking up the steep Taylor St hill. He said that he suddenly saw a man in a dark trench coat cross the street. The man walked right up behind [Maher] standing at the corner and put a small pistol against his head.
