17h 45min, nov 15, 1972 y - Kathleen Ann LaChance
Description:
24yo; Kathleen lived at 4524 Banner Drive in Long Beach at the time of her death. She was last seen alive at 5pm on Wed., Nov. 15 as she was leaving an actors' Workshop play rehearsal at the apartment of a friend, Allen Arkus, at 2301 Ocean Ave in Santa Monica. She left Arkus's apartment with her 2mo puppy named Satan at 5pm. She was planning to meet up with her fiance, Mike Quirck, at a Long Beach restaurant at 6pm.
"As dusk approached", she and her dog walked on the beach. She was attacked some time between 5pm and 6pm. Her body was found at ~6pm near the pier on the Santa Ana Beach. She was found at the end of Hollister Avenue, ~200ft from the surf.
Kathleen's body was nude when found, as her clothes had been ripped off of her. Her arms and legs were bound with narrow leather shoe straps. She had been raped after being stabbed at least 12 times. Sand had been forced into her mouth. She was found lying on her back, her arms and legs strapped tightly to her body with the leather laces. A hunting knife was believed to be the murder weapon. Her body was found only ~15min (or even "only a few minutes") after she was killed.
Her death bears some resemblance to the 1978 murder of Barbara Nantais, who was found on the beach: nude, cut up with a knife, raped, and with sand in her mouth. Barbara had been strangled and died from being bludgeoned.
