17 h, mar 18, 1968 y - Elizabeth Ernstein
Description:
14yo; went missing on March 18 while walking from Moore Junior High School to her home at 776 Crafton Ave in Mentone, ~1.5-2mi east of the school; left school at ~3:30pm
~4:30pm: seen walking east on Citrus Ave near the Crafton Dairy by classmates driving by on a bus
Shortly after 5:00pm: Elizabeth was last seen just west of Crafton Road on Citrus. A woman was seen talking to Elizabeth on Citrus Boulevard shortly after 5pm. Elizabeth reportedly had been crying. Investigators think the woman stopped to see what was wrong, and they wanted to speak with her to see what she knows. The woman was never identified, despite attempts to do so. The woman was in a tan or light blue 1962-65 Ford station wagon, with two kids in the car
Thurs., Mar. 28 at ~2:30am: the family's telephone rang; her mom picked it up, but the person on the other end did not speak at all. After trying to get an answer for five minutes, she hung up. She thinks the silent caller was her missing daughter
One investigator theorized (in Sept. 1969) that Elizabeth was killed then buried "just off Mentone Avenue between Crafton and Agate roads"; "On March 18, 1968, there was an open water pipe ditch along Mentone Boulevard. The ditch was being filled in. A killer could have thrown the body into the ditch [... etc etc]"
1969: skeletal remains found in a shallow grave near Wrightwood, a town 6,000ft up in the San Gabriel Mountains, ~35mi west of Mentone. Those remains were identified as belonging to Elizabeth in 2012. Investigators did not reveal how she died, but it is considered a murder case
