Description:
Recalling resolutions 194 (III) of 11 December 1948, 302 (IV) of 8 December 1949, 393 (V) of 2 December 1950, 513 (VI) of 26 January 1952, 614 (VII) of 6 November 1952, 720 (VIII) of 27 November 1953, 818 (IX) of 4 December 1954, 916 (X) of 3 December 1955, 1018 (XI) of 28 February 1957, and 1191 (XII) of 12 December 1957,
Noting the annual report of the Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, and the report of the Advisory Commission of the Agency,
Regretting the lack of progress in refugee repatriation or compensation as outlined in paragraph 11 of resolution 194 (III), and the minimal advancement in the reintegration programme endorsed in resolution 513 (VI),
Having reviewed the Director's endorsed budget and noting the serious shortfall in contributions,
Draws attention to the precarious financial situation of the Agency and urges governments to increase their contributions to ensure the continuation of relief and rehabilitation programmes for refugees;
Urges the Secretary-General to intensify efforts to secure additional financial assistance urgently needed by the Agency to meet its budget and operational requirements;
Directs the Agency to continue its refugee programmes, considering the responses from paragraphs 1 and 2 above;
Requests the Director to plan and execute projects supporting significant numbers of refugees, focusing on education and vocational training, in line with paragraph 11 of resolution 194 (III);
Calls on host governments to fully cooperate with and assist the Agency in carrying out its functions;
Requests ongoing consultations between the Agency and the United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine, particularly regarding paragraph 11 of resolution 194 (III);
Expresses gratitude to Mr. Henry R. Labouisse, Director of the Agency, for his dedicated service and to the Agency's staff for their continued efforts, as well as to specialized agencies and private organizations for their valuable support to refugees;
Requests the Director to continue submitting reports as per paragraph 21 of resolution 302 (IV), amended by paragraph 11 of resolution 1018 (XI).
