jul 4, 1970 - Sleeping Bag Murders
DOUBLE HOMICIDE & ATTACK
Description:
Thomas Victor Dolan - 17yo; deceased
Thomas Hayes - 19; survived, in critical condition
Homer Clyde Shadwick - 19; deceased
The three had hitchhiked back from fireworks celebrations at Candlestick Park in San Francisco
They then spent the night of July 4, 1970, camped out in their sleeping bags on Campus Point Beach in Santa Barbara
They were found on the morning of July 5, 1970. They had been hacked to death with a bladed weapon: a knife, machete, hatchet, and/or meat cleaver. Thomas Hayes was sent to the hospital in critical condition with multiple head gashes
Three men supposedly picked them up hitchhiking in a van on their way back from the fireworks celebration. These 3 men have been considered suspects. One of them is an Asian man named Carl, possibly from Hong Kong. Another man was Black, and the third was white.
The UCPD reinvestigated the case in 2005. Some online users consider these to be potential Zodiac murders. Five people were found murdered on the same beach in three separate incidents, including Sleeping Bag Murders, in 1970: Sandra Garcia & John Franklin Hood; Thomas Hayes & Home Shadwick; and Ronnee Maxine Brock.
While never connected by authorities, I personally find similarities between these murders and those of Linda Diane Uhlig and Kenneth Allen Holden, who in separate incidents in 1972 were hacked to death by a hatchet. Holden's death has been attributed by some to be the work of the Death Angels/Zebra killers
