On Tuesday, November 14, 1972, Maureen Field, a 19-year-old white girl, was waiting for her father to pick her up after ending her shift at Kmart in Pleasant Hill, Contra Costa County, CA, when she decided to take up an offer of a ride from a man named Philip Joseph Hughes Jr, who was 24 at the time. She never returned home.

Two days later, Maureen's 16-year-old brother answered their family's telephone and handed it to his father. During the anonymous phone call, a man said, "I'm calling about your daughter. She's dead and I killed her." The man never called again.

On February 15, 1973, Maureen's naked, badly decomposed body was found along Morgan Territory Rd, at the foot of Mt Diablo near Clayton. She had been stabbed and strangled.

Maureen was Philip Hughes's first confirmed victim. Hughes's wife Suzanne Perrin helped him with dumping her body.

Philip Hughes was arrested in 1980 after his former wife, Suzanne Perrin, contacted the police. Hughes has since been convicted of the murders of Maureen Field (1972), Lisa Ann Beery (1974), and Letitia Fagot (1975), all in Contra Costa County, CA. He is a possible suspect in the murder of Cosette Ellison (1970).
