On Sunday, April 11, 1971, Kathy Bilek, an 18-year-old white female, visited Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, Santa Clara County, CA to birdwatch in the seclusion of a remote, wooded portion of the park, near a small stream. She did not arrive home.

The next day, her father, Charles, found her body while Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies searched nearby. She had been stabbed 17 times in the back and 32 times in her chest and stomach, though her killer had taken care to avoid stabbing her breasts.

In September 1971, Karl F. Werner — one of Kathy's classmates at Oak Grove High School, who was 18 years old at the time of her death — confessed to the murder alongside those of Debra Furlong and Kathie Snoozy in August 1969. He received a life sentence, and died in 2015.

Werner was residing in Marlborough, Massachusetts at the time of some of the earlier Zodiac slayings, therefore ruling him out as a suspect; I learned of Werner's crimes from an online Zodiac space that mentioned his being ruled out as a suspect.
