Operation Paulus was planned one day before its execution and had the objective of sealing the breach in the Backrooms portal caused by the explosion using obsidian blocks. The operation was named after General Friedrich Paulus, a German commander in World War II who was encircled in Stalingrad. In this case, the intention was symbolic: to “encircle” the Backrooms itself. The strategy was based on the idea that the zombies originated from the Backrooms. By sealing access from both sides, no new creatures could enter the overworld, allowing the existing population to gradually decline.

On July 5th at 9:00 PM (German time), Operation Paulus began. The team consisted of Matthewplays318, PrismaPro13, InfinityZoom187, and Vorhees3709. Their mission required reaching the Backrooms laboratory to fully seal the portal, which proved to be extremely difficult due to heavy resistance from hundreds of zombies blocking their path. Progress was slow and exhausting. A route that would normally take 2–3 minutes required nearly 15 minutes under constant attack. During the mission, BVB got 1, who was in voice contact with Infinity and Prisma, commented: “It sounds like you are having severe problems.” Eventually, Infinity, Prisma, and Matthew reached the target area, although Vorhees had to leave during the mission. Once inside, they collected hundreds of obsidian blocks and successfully sealed the Backrooms portal within minutes. For extraction, the group split up. Infinity and Prisma used a boat to travel across the ocean, avoiding zombie encounters and making their return significantly easier. Matthew attempted to return over land but was lost during the retreat. After several additional encounters with zombies, Infinity and Prisma successfully reached the bunker and were safe. Operation Paulus was declared complete.

However, the following day at 8:21 AM German time, Vorhees3709 informed Infinity of the current situation: Operation Paulus had ultimately failed in its purpose. He was correct, zombies continued to spawn, and no decline in their population was observed.
