Officer Richard Radetich (25yo) was working an overtime traffic detail and stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation, either in the 600 block of Waller St in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco, or outside the San Francisco Hall of Justice on Bryant St. Radetich was in the process of writing a ticket for the vehicle's owner when an unrelated suspect -- ie not the driver he had pulled over -- approached Radetich's vehicle and opened fire through the closed driver's side window. Radetich was hit three (3) times and was killed. The handgun used was a .38 caliber revolver.

The SFPD Fallen Officers page states that the offender has been identified, and also details, "A suspect in the killing was an ex-convict who was extradited from Ohio. However, the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence in 1971."
