Kathleen Johns, 22, and her 10-month-old daughter were on their way to visit a relative in Petaluma, Sonoma County, CA. A man in another car gestured that one of her wheels was wobbling, so she pulled over. The man pulled over as well and offered to fix the problem, though he apparently made it worse: when Johns pulled back onto the highway, the wheel came off. The man again offered to help, convincing her to accept a ride to a service station. The man then drove Kathleen and her baby around desolate backroads near the town of Tracy for almost two hours, threatening to kill them.

Kathleen was able to escape with her baby and found a ride to a nearby town. Her car was later found intentionally set on fire. This all occurred at ~11:15 or 11:30pm on Highway 132 near Patterson, Stanislaus County, CA, west of Modesto.

Her case was widely reported as done by the Zodiac, as Kathleen identified the Zodiac as responsible when she saw his wanted poster at the police station.

According to Wikipedia, Kathleen John's case is thought to be potentially linked to those of Robin Graham, Cheri Jo Bates, Cindy Mellin, Rose Tashman, Christine Eastin, Ernestine Terrello, and Mona Jean Gallegos. These cases are known by some online — and referred to in this timeline — as the Bad Samaritan Murders.
