-majority of North Korean army destroyed --> UN troops continued into North Korea (aim to unify Korea), approaching Yalu River at this point
-Mao troubled by UN/US forces approaching Chinese border - feared China would be invaded
-300,000 Chinese People's Volunteers Force (CPVF) troops cross Yalu River into North Korea
-Chinese believed there were fighting a just war to protect their country + help the Korean people, & they could use experience from Chinese civil war
-Mao believed great motivation (+ numbers) could make up for inferior weapons/supplies
-UN/US forces surprised by sudden Chinese attack - forced to retreat
