jan 1, 650 - Baldr
Dies
Description:
Baldr had a dream of his own death and his mother, Frigg, had the same dream. Odin went to Karnilla to find out it's meaning, and she told him that Baldr will die. In desperation, Frigg sought every magic and technology that she could that would protect her eldest son.
Loki, having learned of the prophecy, sought a way to unmake Frigg's efforts. He found a weakness against Baldr's protections, and had his wife Sigyn procure it so that it cold not be traced to him. Loki gives it to Höðr, Baldr's blind brother. When he learned what he had done, Höðr killed himself. Baldr's body was placed in his ship Hringhorni, which Hermóðr and Baldr's wife Nanna also boarded, to journey him to Niflheim. Arriving, Hermóðr begged that Hela return Baldr to the Aesir. She agreed if all the Aesir agreed that it would be worth her price, which she did not name. Nanna remained with Baldr on Niflheim while Hermóðr returned to Asgard to deliver her terms. Every god agrees, except Loki, who refuses. Baldr is therefore unable to return to life. For Odin and Frigg, this was the final straw with Loki, whom they cast out of Asgard for good.
