jan 1, 1172 - (1172) The Almohad invasion
Description:
1172 AD: Under Abd al-Mu'min, the Almohads overthrew the Almoravid dynasty in Morocco by conquering Marrakesh in 1147 and declaring himself caliph. By 1159, they had extended their power over the entire Maghreb, and by 1172, they controlled all of Muslim Iberia. Between 1146 and 1173, the Almohads gradually took over the Muslim principalities in Iberia from the Almoravids, transferring the capital from Córdoba to Seville. They established a great mosque in Seville, with its tower, the Giralda, erected in 1184, and built the palace Al-Muwarak on the site of what is now the Alcázar of Seville.
