oct 1, 1879 - The Light Bulb

Description:

This year saw the invention of the first effective long-lasting incandescent light bulb, done by the famous inventor Thomas Edison. While others had already demonstrated that artificial light sources could be made, Edison wasn’t content with what already existed, and took it upon himself to continue working on his own light bulb, focusing on the filament, until it reached a peak lifetime of 1,200 hours. He also made a vacuum pump that effectively removed all air from the light bulb, and the socket fitting that has since become today’s standard for light bulbs, called the Edison Screw. Edison’s light bulb was so sophisticated that, with its continued developments, it went on to inspire the invention of many different appliances that use light bulbs today.
