jan 1, 1764 - The Spinning Jenny
Description:
This year saw one of the first and most influential machines that has ever been built: the spinning jenny, invented by a cotton weaver named James Hargreaves. With this machine, the production of yarn skyrocketed, as its multiple spindles allowed for just one worker to spin up to fifty yards of yarn in one sitting. The downside to the early spinning jenny prototypes is that they were a little awkward to operate, requiring a highly skilled worker to pull it off. However, so significant was this machine that it was improved upon to the point where it was so large that it had to be installed in shops specifically meant to deal with the production of yarn., leading to one of the first mechanized professions in the world.
