jan 1, 1619 - Slavery begins
in Jamestown
Description:
The Africans who came to Virginia in 1619 had been taken from Angola in West Central Africa. They were captured in a series of wars that was part of much broader Portuguese hostilities against the Kongo and Ndongo kingdoms, and other states. Race-based slavery was not originally the main source of labor in the American colonies. Indentured servitude was originally the most utilized source of labor, but this later changed to a more codified racial system with race-based, chattel slavery widespread.
