apr 2, 1917 - America Joins World War 1
Description:
America joined the war in Europe after German submarine warfare eroded US neutrality. Very soon after this new addition, the war ended with Allied victory. However, I'd like to focus on how this involvement affected US economy and ended the Progressive Era. Firstly, the War Industries Board massively increased factory production, and factories were now encouraged to hire more workers to fund the war effort. Reduced production after the war led to a massive recession, 5 million jobs lost, and 100,000 bankrupt businesses. This would set up another pro-business era in American history to revive the economy in the 1920s.
