Only after Harry destroys the Diary do the restraints hold Severus fade. He charges over to Harry, interrupting his scene with Ginny as he confirms for himself his worst fears. Fear practically stops his heart. He's unable to hold back his sorrow as he pulls harry into a tight hug, calling him a stupid child and apologizing for being so useless and for failing to protect him. Harry, confused and in pain, tries to assure snape that it wasn't his fault, that he just wasn't quick enough. He apologizes for his attitude and for being a horrible child. ("I was just....really scared. Of loose Mum, now that she was back. I was so afraid that she'd choose you and leave me alone again...leave me to be sent back to aunt Petunia and the cupboard under the stairs. And when she got pregnant....I thought....I was so sure....I was just so scared.....Can you tell Mum I'm really sorry? For what I said last summer?") Fawkes, however, flies in and peeks at Harry's wound, then begins to cry in it. The sudden tears startle Harry, but his wound heals.
