jan 1, 240 BC - First Tragedy Staged at the Ludi Romani
Description:
Latin verse literature is traditionally said to have started in 240 BC when Livius Andronicus staged the first tragedy at the Ludi Romani.
This is significant as Latin verse literature eventually lead to public libraries being instituted and performance-based literary competitions becoming popularized. This in turn promoted education and the advancement of the liberal arts. Tragedy has also influenced a number of later writers, such as William Shakespeare.
