nov 20, 1935 - The death of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam
Description:
Izz ad-Dīn al-Qassam was a Syrian Muslim preacher and a key figure in the resistance against British and French Mandatory rule in the Levant during the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Jableh, Syria in 1882, he studied at Al-Azhar University in Egypt before returning to advocate for and participate in various anti-colonial movements. He later moved to Palestine, where he organized armed resistance against the British authorities and Zionist settlers, forming the Black Hand group. His efforts culminated in his death during a confrontation with British forces in 1935. Al-Qassam's legacy influenced the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine and he is often venerated as a martyr in Palestinian nationalist narratives. His name has been adopted by the military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
