apr 28, 1968 - Rivers of Blood speech

Description:

A conservative MP, Enoch Powell, made an infamous speech in regards to the new immigrants coming from Kenya.

The speech treated the new immigrants as the factor that will lead to the collapse of Britain. Powell said Britain was "insane" to allow unmarried immigrants to move into the country and start a new family.

Ted Heath sacked Powell from the shadow cabinet for this speech, however a lot of the public shared Powell's views. A survey in North London showed 1 in 5 people during the time said they would not be comfortable working with a person of colour. Additionally, there were strikes and protests in London following Powell's sacking. A Gallup poll showed 75% of Britain's population agreed with Powell.
