Description:

After a close election in 1877, the Republicans made a deal with the Democrats to allow their candidate to become the President of the United States in exchange for an end to Reconstruction. The deal was accepted and as Reconstruction came to a close, racist laws that emerged in - and were largely struck down under Reconstruction - began to cement themselves in the South. The Democrats became defined by their support for White Supremacy whereas the Republicans became known for their indifference and occasional hostility to White Supremacy; this system would remain in place until the Great Depression.
