jan 1, 1680 - Popé's Rebellion
Description:
In 1680, Spanish Christianization culminated in Popé's Rebellion - an organized retaliation by the Pueblo Indians in New Mexico that resulted in the Spanish getting a taste of their own medicine. The natives re-established their religious buildings on the ruins of the Spanish Plaza, and it took decades for the Spanish to reclaim New Mexico. This uprising also helped populate Texas, as displaced Indians moved into Spanish-established Pueblos.
