may 4, 1916 - Sussex Pledge

Description:

The Sussex Pledge was an agreement made in 1916 by Germany to the United States, following the German submarine attack on the French passenger ferry "Sussex." Germany promised to alter their naval warfare tactics by ceasing unrestricted submarine warfare, agreeing not to sink merchant or passenger ships without giving due warning and ensuring the safety of passengers and crew, in response to American demands and threats to sever diplomatic relations.
