jul 27, 1948 - Operation GYS 1
Description:
Operation GYS was a military strategy to establish a corridor linking the Negev with the rest of Israel, stretching from Gat and Karatiyya in the north to Bir Abu-Jabir in the south. The operation involved the Givati Brigade deploying from Jaladiyya, the Yiftach Brigade from Gat, and the Negev Brigade from Bror Hayil. The Givati's 53rd Battalion aimed to seize Iraq al-Manshiyya while Yiftach's forces targeted Fallujah under the 1st Battalion's command, planning to converge south of the villages with the Negev's 7th Battalion within a single day.
The operation commenced on July 27, with Givati initiating a diversionary attack on Bayt 'Affa. Despite heavy resistance at Iraq al-Manshiyya, Yiftach's units encircled Fallujah and launched multiple attacks. The initial efforts were thwarted, and due to communication failures, a retreat was ordered. While two companies withdrew promptly, the leading company remained until dawn, resulting in four fatalities and 26 wounded. Concurrently, the Negev forces stationed at Bir Abu-Jabir retreated to their bases following the operation's failure.
