may 3, 1948 - Operation Yevusi
Description:
Operation Yevusi, the second "Battle of Nebi Samwil," was a military operation by the Palmach during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War to secure Jewish control over Jerusalem. Commanded by Yitzhak Sadeh from April 22 to May 3, 1948, the operation aimed to control strategic points around Jerusalem but not all goals were achieved due to a British-enforced ceasefire. Key targets included Nabi Samuel, the highest point in the area, Sheikh Jarrah, a vital access route to Mount Scopus, the predominantly Arab Christian suburb of Katamon, and Augusta Victoria near the Old City. Despite initial setbacks and British intervention, which included declaring Sheikh Jarrah a demilitarized zone and demanding a ceasefire in Katamon, Jewish forces maintained control over Katamon by the operation's end. The aftermath of the conflict saw significant food requisitioning in Katamon to address shortages caused by an Arab blockade, leading to looting and the displacement of approximately 30,000 people, with 750 non-Jews remaining in the occupied areas.
