jan 1, 483 BC - Silver Discovered at Laurion
Description:
In 483 BC, the discovery of a rich vein of silver near modern day Konstantinos, prompted a large scale extraction and processing of silver by the Athenians.
This is significant as the wealth provided by the Laurion mines were used to create a formidable navy of triremes. The Athenian navy proved to be of critical use when the Greeks had to fight off a Persian invasion in 480 BC.
