On 26 April 2005, the last 250 Syrian troops left Lebanon after the Lebanese army had been "rebuilt on sound national foundations and became capable of protecting the state." UN forces were sent to Lebanon to verify the military withdrawal which was mandated by Security Council resolution 1559.
