Lady Chatterley's Lover was a sexually explicit book which caused a court case against the publishing company Penguin when the book was published in Britain.
Penguin won the case against the Obscenity Act and 2 million copies were sold.
However many thought media such as Lady Chatterley's Lover demonstrated a wave of depravity. Mary Whitehouse was a pioneer against this "immorality and depravity".
The press also shared the same sentiment. The public was generally socially conservative.
