sep 25, 1918 - Second Battle of Amman
Description:
The Second Battle of Amman, part of the Third Transjordan attack during the Battle of Nablus and the larger Battle of Megiddo, occurred on 25 September 1918, in the late stages of the Sinai and Palestine Campaign of World War I. After cutting off the Ottoman retreat route by capturing the Jisr ed Damieh bridge over the Jordan River on 22 September, Chaytor's Force advanced eastwards, conquering Es Salt and then engaging the Ottoman Fourth Army's rearguard at Amman. This victory followed two unsuccessful earlier EEF attempts to cross the Jordan in March and April 1918. Concurrently, General Edmund Allenby’s EEF commenced the Battle of Sharon along the Mediterranean coast, initiating a series of successful attacks that included breaking through the Ottoman Eighth Army lines. Chaytor’s Force, while securing the Jordan Valley, aggressively pursued the retreating Ottoman forces, culminating in capturing significant territory and forces, including a large part of the Fourth Army's rearguard and the Hejaz Railway garrison, effectively ending major military resistance in the area. These actions were crucial in the eventual Allied success of the Megiddo offensive, capturing significant numbers of prisoners and military equipment, and forcing the remnants of the Ottoman armies into a disordered retreat.
