jan 3, 1919 - Faisal–Weizmann agreement

Description:

The Faisal-Weizmann Agreement was signed on January 3, 1919, by Emir Faisal of Hejaz and Chaim Weizmann of the Zionist Organization, just before the Paris Peace Conference. This agreement, aimed at supporting Jewish settlement in Palestine with the approval of the Arab population, was part of a broader attempt to establish mutual support between Arabs and Jews in the region. Despite its importance, the agreement was contingent on the fulfillment of British wartime promises of Arab independence, which were not met. Faisal signed the agreement without consulting his advisors and added a caveat in Arabic making his acceptance conditional. The document was presented at the Paris Peace Conference without this caveat. Historian Yoav Gelber later described the agreement as having only propaganda value since the conditions were never fulfilled. Various prior agreements and declarations, such as the McMahon-Hussein Correspondence and the Sykes-Picot Agreement, also influenced the context in which this agreement was made, reflecting the complex international interests in the Arab lands during that period.
