jan 1, 1541 - The golden gate is sealed of
Description:
The Golden Gate, historically significant and symbolically important, has a complex history of openings and closures. Initially closed by Muslims in 810, it was reopened by the Crusaders in 1102 but later walled up again by Saladin in 1187 after he regained control of Jerusalem. Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent rebuilt it along with the city walls but walled it up once more in 1541, and it has remained sealed since then.
In Jewish tradition, the Golden Gate is believed to be the gate through which the Messiah will enter Jerusalem. This belief is rooted in the idea that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah according to Muslim belief. Some suggest that Suleiman sealed off the gate to prevent a false Messiah or "Antichrist" from entering through it. Additionally, a cemetery was built in front of the gate to prevent a false precursor to the Messiah, Elijah, from passing through. This belief is based on the idea that Elijah, as a descendant of Aaron, is a priest or kohen and therefore prohibited from entering a cemetery according to Jewish law. However, it's important to note that according to Jewish law, a kohen is permitted to enter a cemetery where both Jews and non-Jews are buried, such as the one outside the Golden Gate, as long as certain purity laws are followed.
