The Safed attacks occurred shortly after the Ottoman conquest of the Levant in 1517, involving clashes between retreating Mamluk soldiers and the new Ottoman authorities. The Jewish population of Safed suffered significant casualties and property losses, prompting many to flee the city. Despite the devastation, the community received aid from Egyptian Jewry and managed to rebuild within a few years, surpassing its previous size. The Ottoman conquest also led to institutional changes, including the abolition of the Nagid office, signaling a shift in governance for Egyptian Jews under the new regime.
