jan 1, 1123 - Battle of Yibneh
Description:
In 1123, the Crusader force under Eustace Grenier decisively defeated a Fatimid army from Egypt near Yibneh, thwarting their attempt to capture Jaffa. Following the First Crusade's capture of Jerusalem, the Fatimid vizier al-Afdal launched several unsuccessful invasions of the Kingdom of Jerusalem until his assassination in 1121. With Jerusalem weakened by King Baldwin II’s capture and the regency of Eustace Grenier, the new vizier, al-Ma'mun al-Bata'ihi, launched a major invasion in 1123. However, the Crusaders’ heavy cavalry overwhelmed the Fatimids' less mobile infantry and light cavalry at Yibna. This victory ended the immediate Fatimid threat, with only minor raids continuing from Ascalon until 1153. The next significant military engagement in the region was the Battle of Azaz in 1125.
