The Compromise of 1877 resolved the disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. Under the terms of the compromise, Democrats agreed to concede the presidency to Hayes in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from the South, effectively ending Reconstruction and leaving African Americans in the South without federal protection of their civil and voting rights.
