oct 1, 1854 - Kansas-Nebraska Act

Description:

The Kansas-Nebraska Act, passed in 1854, created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska, and allowed the settlers in those territories to decide whether to allow slavery through the principle of popular sovereignty. This act effectively repealed the Missouri Compromise, which had prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30', leading to increased sectional conflict and the violent period known as "Bleeding Kansas" as pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces clashed.
