Description:

- Failed US purchase of Cuba from Spain
- Suggested that US should take Cuba by force if Spain refused to sell it
- Abolitionists viewed it as a plot to extend slavery
- Southerners feared Cuba would become a free "Black republic" and so supported the manifesto
