The Carolinas were originally a single territory granted by King Charles II of England to eight loyal proprietors in 1663, situated in the southern English colonies in North America. Due to differences in settlement patterns, economic practices, and conflicts with Native American tribes and Spanish colonies, the territory was officially divided into two separate colonies in 1729, North Carolina and South Carolina, both of which played significant roles in the development of southern colonial culture, politics, and economy.
