nov 20, 1542 - New Laws
Description:
The New Laws were a set of regulations enacted by the Spanish Crown under King Charles I, aimed at protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in the Americas and regulating the encomienda system. Although enforcement of these laws was often weak or resisted in the colonies, they represented one of the first systematic attempts by a European power to limit the abuses of colonialism and protect indigenous rights in the New World.
