jan 2, 43 - Roman Invasion
of Britain
Description:
Using Emperor Caligula's failed invasion plans from three years prior, Emperor Claudius sends an army to conquer Britain, originating as an aid to his vassal king Verica of the Atrebates who has lost rulership of the tribe. Some tribes, particularly in the south, welcome Roman occupation, whereas others fight back aggressively. The invasion ends with "Britannia" becoming a province of Rome.
The Brittonic warriors are described by the Romans as fighting bare, with blue war paint from the woad plant, screaming and roaring in combat, with their greatest assets being their use of guerrilla tactics and throwing spears from horse-drawn carriages.
