In 1935, Freud "was contacted by a worried mother who was seeking treatment for her son's apparent homosexuality. Sigmund Freud writes "Letter to an American Mother," urging compassion and tolerance for homosexuality. As a public figure with an impactful and intelligent reputation, Freud was able to offer a lot of support for the gay community and rebutting the claim that being gay is a mental illness.
