dec 9, 1531 - Saint Juan Diego see’s the first apparition of the Virgin Mary
Description:
Drawn from the Nican Mopohua and Huei tlamahuiçoltica, Juan Diego, a Chichimec peasant, saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary at Tepeyac Hill. She revealed herself as the virginal Mother of God and instructed him to ask the bishop to build a chapel in her honour, so she might “relieve the distress of all those who call on her in their need.” Juan Diego told the bishop, Fray Juan Zumárraga, who told Juan Diego to come back another day. Juan Diego saw the Virgin’s apparition four times after this, cementing her position as the patron saint of Latin America and demonstrating her centrality to the evolution of Catholicism in New Spain.
