jan 1, 149 BC - Cato's Figs
Description:
Cato the elder, a Roman senator who had fought in the 2nd Punic war, allegedly pulled out a fig from his tunic and expressed how fresh they were and said they were a 3 days journey from Carthage.
This alarmed the Roman senate because it reminded them of how wealthy powerful and close Carthage was to them.
This is likely a fabrication though, or Cato lied and got the figs from somewhere else.
