The next logical step for audio recording was to remove tape entirely as the Alesis ADAT would often chew up the tape and spoil recordings. A hard disc is a magnetic disc that can store digital information and they are found in every computer, it is what allows work to be saved to that computer and it allowed for multi-track recordings to be done without losing quality and without having to use tape.
