Description:
The first national convention of the Daughters of Bilitis, a lesbian rights organization, opens in San Francisco. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, the founders of the organization, also organized this convention. Two hundred women attend from around the United States, making it the largest public gathering of lesbians in the U.S. up until that point. The convention brought awareness to lack of rights for lesbians and it offered support for people who identified as lesbians.Added to timeline:
