mar 12, 1996 - Helms-Burton Act
Description:
-introduced by USA during worst period of Cuba's economic crisis
-sanctions against: US businesses importing from Cuba, countries/businesses/institutions trading with or loaning to Cuba, foreign businesses using previously US-owned resources nationalised by Cuba
-embargo wouldn't be lifted until: Castro's government replaced, & nationalised property returned to "original owners" (+ compensation paid)
-Castro claimed that the act was "harming the sovereignty of the rest of the world"
-increased "growing global disgust" at USA - strong resistance, e.g. EU effectively declared it illegal in international law (told member states to ignore it)
-failure: didn't stop foreign investments to Cuba
