jan 1, 855 - Tithing
Description:
The term "tithing" originated in the 10th century. It referred to the households in an area that comprised of ten hides, and each of those households had a head referred to as a "tithingman". Historically, it was assumed that all tithingmen were males and older than 12. Every tithingman was individually responsible for the actions and behavior of all the members of the tithing by a system known as "frankpledge". If a person accused of a crime was not forthcoming, his tithing was fined. If the accused person was not part of the frankpledge, then the whole town was subject to the fine.
