The third post in this series, inspired by Colonna's "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" and WATTEAU's "Embarquement pour Cythère" (1), explores how Cythère was popular among publishers of French books during three centuries 1700-1999. ... The search in Europeana is limited to publications available in the public domain. Hence, the selection of 37 publications is far from exhaustive. Among them some are the comedies of the list discussed in the post 110/ A voyage to Cythera (2) like ‘Ésope à Cythère , comédie en un acte et en vers libres, par M. Dancourt’ (1). This collection of title pages reveals that 15 publications feature a fake imprint ‘A Cythère, …’ or other funny addresses like ‘A Gnide, aux dépens de Vénus’. This general phenomenon of fake imprints of publishers, who tried to avoid censorship because the highly erotic content of the publication of for other reasons, has been studied extensively (2). Data related to publications about Cythère were retrieved and are summarized in Table 1: 53 publications from 1741 to 1941 and 6 undated.
